Skilled Nursing in Florida

Higher-level medical care and rehabilitation services for seniors with complex health needs, recovering from surgery, or requiring ongoing clinical support.

What Is Skilled Nursing?

Skilled nursing facilities (SNFs) — sometimes called nursing homes or rehabilitation centers — provide the highest level of residential care available outside of a hospital. They are staffed by licensed nurses and therapists who provide medical care, rehabilitation services, and personal care around the clock.

In Florida, skilled nursing facilities are licensed and regulated by the Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA) and are also subject to federal Medicare and Medicaid certification requirements. They are distinct from assisted living facilities in both the level of care provided and the regulatory framework that governs them.

Skilled nursing care may be short-term — for example, rehabilitation following a hip replacement or stroke — or long-term, for individuals with chronic conditions or significant functional decline who require ongoing clinical support.
