Independent Living in Florida

Active senior communities for older adults who are largely self-sufficient and want a maintenance-free lifestyle with social opportunities and amenities.

What Is Independent Living?

Independent living communities — sometimes called retirement communities, senior apartments, or continuing care retirement communities (CCRCs) — are designed for older adults who are largely self-sufficient and do not require regular personal care assistance.

These communities offer private apartments or cottages, maintenance-free living, and a range of amenities and social activities. The focus is on lifestyle, convenience, and community — not on medical or personal care.

Unlike assisted living, independent living communities in Florida are not licensed as care facilities by AHCA. They are residential communities that happen to serve an older adult population. Some communities are part of a continuum of care campus that also includes assisted living and memory care, allowing residents to transition to higher levels of care if needed without moving to a new location.
